Turn it up Turn it up

what is Turn it up?

Turn up your volume: start here

Turn it up is all about amplifying the whispers of people living in poverty to those in power. Countless people from all over the world are calling for change, but their voices are drowned out by the noise of the rich and the powerful. Turn it up asks you to listen to those whispers, to here their voice, and to add your volume.

Turn it up is a resource for youth and student groups. Here's what the journey it takes you on looks like:

Session 1: Identify. Standing in the shoes of someone whose experience is poverty is the first step to effective campaigning. This session makes poverty very personal through exploring the life of Ugandan teen Stidia, through film, discussion, practical challenges, Bible exploration and practical activities. The session feeds seamlessly into the Water Challenge.

Water Challenge:
Remove self from bed. Use – and flush – loo. Find – and swill under tap – yesterday’s bowl. Pour cereal, eat. Boil full kettle. Make coffee. Run bath. Brush teeth (with tap running). Stop. Step into Stidia’s shoes. Start again: Remove self from bed. Use – and don’t flush – loo. Find – and don’t swill – yesterday’s bowl. Pour cereal, eat. Boil nearly empty kettle. Make coffee. Don’t run bath. Brush teeth (without tap running).

The Water Challenge is about habits and shoes: stepping out of your ingrained habits and into Stidia’s unfamiliar shoes. You get a daily 10 litre water allowance – and a unique insight into an outrageous injustice.

Session 2: Amplify. It’s all about action. This session explores why so many people have to live this challenge, every day. Using discussion starters, creative activities, gripping facts and harsh realities we ask what the government can – and must – do. Understanding that our government must act, we begin, here, to amplify the voices of poor people to them. This session follows the Water Challenge into practical action for people like Stidia.
