COP stands for Conference of the Parties and is an annual meeting of the countries involved in the reducing the level of greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere.
The first meeting was in 1995 and COP-13 will happen on 3-14 December 2007 in Bali, Indonesia. The main focus for this meeting will be the discussions of a new international deal to limit carbon emissions after the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012.
COP is also the place where governments talk about helping poor countries adapt to changes in the climate. For people in many of the countries where Tearfund works, one of the most important outcomes from this year’s COP could be an agreement on how we can best help countries adapt.
