HIV is a completely treatable viral infection and whilst it may not be curable there are drugs (ARVs) available which allow people living with HIV to lead perfectly normal lives free from the effects of virus for many years.
So there’re meds available which could provide respite and lengthened life, however only 1 in 4 of the people who urgently needed medication were able to access the drugs. This is for a number of reasons including cost and availability of drugs.
In Zambia, ARV medication has been free of charge since 2007 and this has meant that all who need this life-saving medication can be treated. ARVs have provided a new lease of life for many people, who can now take part in their community.
In 2005 the G8, and subsequently the UN, agreed that by 2010 as near to Universal Access to treatment should be achieved. However we need to make to sure that our government keeps it’s promise.
