The G8 in 2007 promised to target 5million people for urgent anti-retroviral (ARV) drug treatment.  These are the drugs that help to control and manage the effects of the virus on the body.

They committed to spend $60billion (US) on treating and preventing the spread of HIV, TB, Malaria and strengthening healthcare around the world over the coming years.

Important promises were made to help pregnant women gain better access to HIV treatment, which is vital in reducing and preventing mother to child transmission.  They also agreed to care for 10million orphans and vulnerable children.
