rachel's story

Rachel is not playing mums and dads.

Every day she cooks, cleans, digs the land, and worries about 6 children orphaned by AIDS.

It's too much, too young. Rachel is only 13 years old and has been acting as a single parent since the age of eight.

"When my parents died, I realised I'm left alone and as the eldest I have to look after the younger ones."

She's not alone.  Because in Uganda, there are one million children orphaned by AIDS.  Another one million more orphaned by conflict, disease or mothers dying in childbirth.  Shocking stats for just one country in Africa, but it's a global crisis.

Worldwide, a child is orphaned by AIDS every 15 seconds...there's another one.

"I've missed out a lot as a child," says Rachel. "Other children have parents who cater for them, but I just struggle along."
