Tearfund gets the essential importance of access to water and sanitation for healthy living, and is seen by the UK government as being one of the leading agencies on this issue.
For many years Tearfund has been working with church-based partners including the Diocese of Kigezi, Uganda and the Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church as well as numerous smaller scale programmes all working at local community level. But for these programmes to work there must be national and international support, which, you guessed it, is where our new campaign comes in.
Tearfund’s campaign in a nutshell is this.
We need a Global Framework for Action which will set out how Millenium Development Goal 7 (target 10) can be achieved by 2015. This MDG target aims to reduce the proportion of people without access to safe water and sanitation by half, by 2015. We want this plan to be agreed during 2010.
Tearfund’s current 10 year vision is to see 50 million people lifted out of spiritual and physical poverty. In order to achieve this vision the forgotten development issue of improved access to water, sanitation and hygiene must be addressed urgently in combination with other development areas.
