There are millions of children around the world who live in homes without adults. Most often this is because their parents have died from AIDS-related illness. We call these child-headed households and nobody knows precisely how many there are of them. Here in the UK and Ireland there are children facing terrible loss. But in many countries their peers must face the same grief without the support of the state, in situations of crushing poverty. These young people must make choices that carry incredible weight – life and death choices that must be made every day.
That’s why we need to wake up.
