be the vision

We’ve always been passionate about uniting to fight the problems of poverty and injustice.

Lately though, things have changed for us at Tearfund. It’s not that the problems have changed or that our old ideas have left the building.

It’s just this: we’re seeing a bigger picture. We’re getting a fresh vision of how the world could be if the church lived the way Jesus taught us.

How different would things be if we took all the passion and integrity, the danger and the challenge, the love and the service that we see modelled in the gospel?

We think things would be very different. In fact, we think that if we had just 100,000 local churches uniting in their work and prayer we could see as many as 50 million people set free from extreme poverty within the next ten years.

Not a bad set of numbers, huh?

But here’s the thing: we need you to be one of them. You, with all your your mates and your energy and your questions and your concerns. We need you

Five problems we’re tackling

hiv and aids
Somewhere in the world, with every minute that passes five people die from AIDS. In the same time yet another baby is born with HIV. This is preventable by using drugs which cost just a few pounds. Our Work a miracle appeal has raised millions to fight HIV and AIDS, but the struggle continues.

To help us fundraise for our fight against AIDS take part in a Front room Fundraiser for more info click here.

water and sanitation
More than one billion people lack access to clean water.

2.4 billion are without proper toilet facilities. As a result deaths which are easily preventable are happening in their millions. We’re aiming to get safe water and toilets within 500 metres of everyone in the communities where we work.

disasters
In 2005 157,511,938 people were affected by disasters.

90% of them lived in poor countries. We are working to relieve the impact left behind by floods, tsunamis, droughts, hurricanes and more. But we’re also working to help communities be better prepared for what happens when disaster strikes.

trade injustice
If the world’s poorer countries could sell what they make at a fair price the lives of billions would be transformed. Yet every day these countries lose out on £1.3 billion – 14 times the amount that they receive in aid. Why? Because of the way that unjust trade rules help wealthy countries get richer at the same time as keeping the poor ones trapped. Our whole lives can fight this; from the way we shop to the power we have to talk to our politicians.

climate change
It might mean water shortages and overflowing rivers for us, but climate change makes the biggest impact on the world’s poorest people. As a result by 2050 there will be 150 million people who have been forced to leave their homes as a result of natural disasters caused by climate change. Together we can act to change all this.
