jobs for the future

Maybe you're in that place of asking what next?

Maybe you're interested in the world of relief and development and maybe you're thinking you would one day like to work for Tearfund.

We've taken some time out to ask various members of Tearfund staff from different departments how they got to
the position they are in.

We hope you'll find this helpful and that you will see there are many avenues into the career of your choice.

Handy Hint: one of the best ways to get a footing in this area of work is to start off as a volunteer for Tearfund either in the UK or overseas with Transform.

Please check back regularly to see the latest interviews!

Procurement Officer Frances Crutchley

What is your role?

I'm part of the DMT technical services team in the UK. We provide logistics support to all the DMT operational teams.

What does a normal day look like for you?
The day is really varied: It can consist of a number of activities from communicating with the logisitics co-ordinators in the DMT programmes, purchasing from suppliers to sorting out stock and packing up goods for freighting to programmes.  I also spend time briefing people who are heading out to the field about Tearfund's logistics practices and working on process and systems improvements for DMT logistics.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love all the contact with different people and the fact that I am supporting all the DMT teams, its very satisfying to know that I can be playing my part in helping the teams who are in the front line in the field.

What do you find the most difficult?
When it gets really hectic its not always easy to prioritise, but there is never anyone too far away to call upon to help.

How did you get there?
Prior to joining Tearfund I worked as a buyer for a commerical logistics company.  I then decided I wanted to use my experience in the humanitarian sector. I had been on a Transform team with Tearfund and attended the local prayer group, so when a job came up which seemed to fit my professional experience I knew I had to apply!

What advice would you give to a graduate wanting to enter this work?
I think its worth trying to gather some experience in the logistics industry in order to understand the main principles and be able to bring experience to the role.
